Do you have students who you advise or know of students in your department who might be interested in summer research? Heck…you might just want to forward it to all of the ChE students in your department!

So don't be caught into the trap affecting so many ME's and EE's, this year with them scrambling to get their hours at the last minute in order to be able to graduate. Some just wont make it!! To be forewarned is to be forearmed!!

1. On a downhill road the potential energy of the bicyclist is being converted to kinetic energy, and thus the bicyclist picks up speed. There is no creation of energy, and thus no violation of the conservation of energy principle.

4. The radiator should be analyzed as an open system since mass is crossing the boundaries of the system.

6. Intensive properties do not depend on the size (extent) of the system but extensive properties do.

7. For a system to be in thermodynamic equilibrium, the temperature has to be the same throughout but the pressure does not. However, there should be no unbalanced pressure forces present. The increasing pressure with depth in a fluid, for example, should be balanced by increasing weight.

8. A process during which the temperature remains constant is called isothermal; a process during which the pressure remains constant is called isobaric; and a process during which the volume remains constant is called isochoric.

9. The zeroth law of thermodynamics states that two bodies are in thermal equilibrium if both have the same temperature reading, even if they are not in contact.
10. Two systems having different temperatures and energy contents are brought in contact. The direction of heat transfer is to be determined.
Analysis Heat transfer occurs from warmer to cooler objects. Therefore, heat will be transferred from system B to system A until both systems reach the same temperature.

11. A gas contained in a vertical piston-cylinder device is pressurized by a spring and by the weight of the piston. The pressure of the gas is to be determined.

12. The pressure in a pressurized water tank is measured by a multi-fluid manometer. The gage pressure of air in the tank is to be determined.
Assumptions The air pressure in the tank is uniform (i.e., its variation with elevation is negligible due to its low density), and thus we can determine the pressure at the air-water interface.
Properties The densities of mercury, water, and oil are given to be 13,600, 1000, and 850 kg/m3, respectively.
Analysis Starting with the pressure at point 1 at the air-water interface, and moving along the tube by adding (as we go down) or subtracting (as we go up) the ρgh terms until we reach point 2, and setting the result equal to Patm since the tube is open to the atmosphere gives
P1 + ρwater gh1 + ρoil gh2 − ρ mercury gh3 = Patm
Solving for P1,
P1 = Patm − ρ water gh1 − ρ oil gh2 + ρ mercury gh3
or,
P1 − Patm = g(ρ mercuryh3 − ρ waterh1 − ρ oilh2 )

Noting that P1,gage = P1 - Patm and substituting,

= 56.9 kPa

Discussion Note that jumping horizontally from one tube to the next and realizing that pressure remains the same in the same fluid simplifies the analysis greatly.

13. The sum of all forms of the energy a system possesses is called total energy. In the absence of magnetic, electrical and surface tension effects, the total energy of a system consists of the kinetic, potential, and internal energies.

14. The internal energy of a system is made up of sensible, latent, chemical and nuclear energies. The sensible internal energy is due to translational, rotational, and vibrational effects.

15. Energy can cross the boundaries of a closed system in two forms: heat and work.

16. The form of energy that crosses the boundary of a closed system because of a temperature difference is heat; all other forms are work.

17. An adiabatic process is a process during which there is no heat transfer. A system that does not exchange any heat with its surroundings is an adiabatic system.

18. It is a work interaction.

19. It is a work interaction since the electrons are crossing the system boundary, thus doing electrical work.

20. It is a heat interaction since it is due to the temperature difference between the sun and the room.

21. This is neither a heat nor a work interaction since no energy is crossing the system boundary. This is simply the conversion of one form of internal energy (chemical energy) to another form (sensible energy).

22. Point functions depend on the state only whereas the path functions depend on the path followed during a process. Properties of substances are point functions, heat and work are path functions.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS II COURSEWORK ASSIGNMENT SCHEDULE 2K8

1.Mini presentation due at the start of Thursday tutorials (5.0 %). Groups must select a topic to review and summarize for 15 minutes at the beginning of each tutorial class starting February 01 and continuing until March 15. The summary should be 3-5 typewritten pages, using 1.5 spacing with indented lines at the start of each paragraph. The marking scheme will be as follows: Presentation: Speech & mannerism – 10, Use of visual aids – 5, Subject knowledge - 10 Summary, Layout & flow -5, Content & accuracy -10, Punctuation & grammar -10 for a total of 50. Students may make selections from the following topics: (a) Intermolecular forces and the Lennard-Jones Potential- Due date: Feb 01, (b) The Soave-Redlich-Kwong Equation of State- Due date: Jan 26, (c) Peng- RobinsonEquation of State- Due date: Feb 5, (d) Determination of the temperature of the sun- Due date: Feb 22, (e) Bubble-point & Dew-Point calculations using Txy diagrams- Due date: Mar 01, (f) Psychometric charts and their uses- Due date: Mar 18, (g) Adiabatic Flame temperature and its calculation- Due date: Mar 15.

2. Homework assignments (5.0 %). Homework questions will be issued at tutorial sessions for submission at the end of the tutorial session after the next. All assignments will be used to compute the final marks for homework.

3. Midsemester test (10.0 %). Students will sit an open book test at 1000 hrs on Monday, February 23 involving a combination of three (3) essay or numerical questions. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP-TEST!!

4. Major presentation due April 23 (10.0 %). Groups must select a topic to research and present to a panel of assessors. The written reports must be submitted one week prior to the presentation date. Presentation will commence at 0900 hrs in the Chemical Engineering simulation laboratory with duration of 20 minutes for each topic. Groups will make their presentations in reverse numerical order. Topics include: Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC), Regenerative (Reversible) Fuel Cells, Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells (MCFC), Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC), The thermodynamics of mechanical explosions, The thermodynamics of chemical explosions & The thermodynamics of electrochemical processes.

5. Project due April 09 (15.0 %). Each student must search the internet and technical literature for information on making thermodynamic toys. The demonstration will be held in the Unit Operations Lab before a panel of assessors drawn from within the faculty.
