Course Objectives
COURSE OBJECTIVES
- Apply mathematics and the basic sciences in formulating chemical engineering theories.
- Identify, formulate and solve chemical engineering problems in industry using the theories, principles and knowledge of process engineering.
- Design and conduct experiments and analyse/interpret the data collected so as to validate chemical engineering theories and optimise processes.
- Communicate effectively using graphical, written and oral methods in both Spanish and English.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of chemical engineering tools such as the computer, laboratory scale and pilot plants.
- Exhibit competence in operations and project management.
- Apply simulation techniques to analyse the performance of individual equipment (such as compressors, separators, pumps, reactors) and complete plants in both normal operating conditions and start-up conditions.
- Use technical criteria and economics to evaluate candidate materials for construction of equipment and process apparatus subjected to specify chemical environments and operating conditions.
- Utilize the principles of unit operations to design, evaluate and optimise the performance of environmental protection, chemical and biotechnology facilities.
- Utilize the principles of industrial microbiology in the design, evaluation and optimisation of biotechnology processes, food preservation, biosynthesis of active substances and decomposition processes.
- Understand the role of the engineer in society.
- Fulfil the academic requirements for engineering accreditation for membership in professional engineering organisation in Jamaica (JIE), the Caribbean region (CCEO) and internationally (ABET).
